Word Painting: A Guide to Writing More Descriptively

Rebecca McClanahan

Writer’s Digest Books, 1999

If your writing lacks zip, then Word Painting is a great resource to read. I was impressed by the author’s guidance and repetition that effective descriptions rely on the senses, accurate and precise words, and must fit the overall story. She also discusses metaphors and how to reveal a trait, emotion, or attitude through descriptive action.

This book is jam-packed with information, and I will need to read it multiple times to comprehend and practice all the suggestions provided. The organization is helpful, because it builds upon itself. Chapters first focus on writing vocabulary and elements, move to a discussion of sensory descriptions, and finish with setting, plot, pace, and a story review to ensure all components tie together. Also, at the end of each chapter, exercises provide ways for the reader to practice the skills.

I think Word Painting is a useful resource for writing instructors and those who want to improve their own writing. I came away with a better understanding of description, a list of exercises students and I can practice, and three pages of notes!
