Web Report: David Leahy's Website

This
is an amazing example of what a teacher can do in creating a website. Though David Leahy has only taught for
a few years, he has already earned several awards--not only for his website,
but for his teaching as well.
I
originally found this page when searching for materials to supplement a unit
on the book Thunder Cave (set in Kenya). The top site listed was a page on the Swahili alphabet. After reading Jambo Means Hello,
David Leahy's students had created a Swahili alphabet book, recorded the sounds
of the words, and posted their work on the web. This is just one example of the rich activities
he's done with his students and published. This site then connected me to Leahy's
home page and I was amazed at the content and design. He even has, included in his own site,
the opportunity to send virtual postcards designed by his students.
His
websites includes collections of students samples and websites related to
numerous units. Each month he
adds new information detailing the units they've covered, the websites they
used as resources, and examples of student work. He has an additional page just for dozens of links categorized
by unit and subject area. This
is a very inspiring website!
Leahy
has taught at two schools in the Beaverton School District (Jacob Wismer Elementary
and, currently, Greenway Elementary School) and has created separate websites
for each school. Be sure to check
out both of them!
